5 Tips to Be a Practicing Member of Your Loved One’s Assisted Living Team

When it comes time for your loved one to enter an assisted living facility, you and your family can face many challenges throughout the transition. Such a big life shift can cause any member of the family to  feel scared, hopeless, or worthless in the effort. You aren’t “giving up” on your loved one. You are “giving up” responsibility to skilled professionals who are there purely to make your loved one’s life better. Here are a few ways to assume your new role, a member of the Assisted Living Care team at Tennyson Court.

Maintain an Open Mind

It’s completely normal to be challenged by the fact that your loved one is going to live and be cared for by complete strangers. It is normal to feel nervous. What you must remember is that as our loved ones grow older they begin to experience more and more health issues, and their needs are met by our facilities. Expect the most positive living experience and comprehensive care possible, and recognize you aren’t giving up, you’re just building a team.

Recognize that our Assisted Living Pros are Experts

No, we don’t know your Mom, Dad, or family member as well as you and your family, but we can assume you might not have the tools, team, and resources for Assisted Living and Memory Care as we do. We have a skilled team of professionals that are experts in their field, and have years of experience caring for other elders in endless situations very similar to yours. It is a positive to have us on on your loved one’s path.

Remember Your Essential Role on the Team

Like we said, we don’t know your loved one now, and we don’t know who they were and how they lived prior to looking into assisted living. If he or she was someone who was engaging and carried out conversations, and isn’t seeming the same, we need to know. If they are allergic, or have particular living preferences we need to know. We WANT to know. We want to know how we can make this transition as seamless and positive as possible, and you are a big part of helping that happen.

Meet Our Team!

Here at Tennyson, everyone plays a role in the care of your loved one. We encourage family and friends to meet all of us early in your loved one’s stay. This creates a relationship and makes you another instrumental member of our team. When you need someone, or your loved one needs someone, you’ll know just who to go to!

Attend Care Plan Meetings/Social Gatherings

We want you to know as much as possible. When we have meetings concerning changes, or progress of care, we want you to be there. When we have a social gathering, please feel free to join us! We love seeing family members interact with our residents, and meet the other residents. These are your loved ones friends! Take your place on the team and meet the whole Tennyson Court Family!

  • Everyone at Tennyson Court has been so warm and loving to my father for the last 2 years. You have all made his life happier during his time there. You are all the eyes and hands of the families of your residents when we can not be with them.

  • Thank you for showing us and our mom so much care, love and attention while we were a part of the Tennyson family. You truly made our time with you so enjoyable!
